Compliant plug-in solar has been legal in Great Britain since 27 August 2026 (SI 2026/848, following the government's 24 March 2026 announcement). Follow the kit instructions and notify the Distribution Network Operator free within 28 days, for example via myplugin.solar. 2. A suitable battery can be charged from a wall socket and power suitable appliances from its own output socket today. 3. A battery may be professionally hardwired as a conventional household system where the exact model, property and connection route qualify. Output and backup capability are model-specific. 4. The solar-only rules do not automatically permit self-installed battery discharge into household wiring through a plug. 5. “Future-ready” is not a guarantee of future certification, approval or a software-enabled legal change. ## How battery savings work A battery can charge during a cheaper tariff window and supply a suitable direct appliance or verified installed load later. Savings depend on tariff spread, battery losses, capacity and the load actually shifted. Calculators are estimates, not guarantees. Suitable direct-load examples may include a fridge/freezer, router, home-office equipment, aquarium circulation equipment, or heating controls. Check normal running watts and start-up surge. Do not assume a battery can run a complete heat pump. ## Key guides - [Balcony solar panels UK](https://plugin-energy.co.uk/balcony-solar-panels-uk) - [800 W balcony solar savings](https://plugin-energy.co.uk/blog/800w-balcony-solar-savings) - [Plug-in solar panels UK](https://plugin-energy.co.uk/plug-in-solar-panels-uk) - [Is plug-in solar legal?](https://plugin-energy.co.uk/blog/is-plug-in-solar-legal-uk) - [How to register a plug-in solar kit (G98)](https://plugin-energy.co.uk/blog/g98-plug-in-solar-notification-uk) - [Are plug-in batteries legal?
